Numerous studies show the importance of reading to your child at an early age sets them on a path for a lifetime of success. In order to raise awareness about the proven benefits of establishing this activity in every young child’s home, our friends at The Goddard School in Castle Rock want to be sure that more children in Colorado have access to books through their annual book drive.

‘As parents talk, sing, and read to children, the children’s brain cells are literally turned on (Shore, 1997).’ From infant stages to childhood, the importance of stimulation creates pathways in the brain that build a base for many skills like literacy. Because of this, Goddard has worked to create an enriched learning environment with a strong emphasis on language and literacy.goddardschool

And realizing that there are many children who have little or no introduction to reading, oftentimes it is because they have no access to books. In order to address this need and teach their students about giving to those living in less fortunate circumstances, they have created The Goddard School book drive. ‘All the Goddard Schools will be working together to raise 18,000 books for Reach Out and Read Colorado,’ notes Goddard.

Reach Out And Read Colorado will begin on January 23rd and run through February 20th. During that time The Goddard Schools will be accepting gently used book donations in the front foyer in the designated boxes. Once the books are collected, area Doctors and Nurses will then distribute them to youngsters during pediatric checkups.

‘Also, to go along with our Book Drive we will be inviting our parents in to read to their child’s classroom. The signup sheets will be posted on classroom doors Toddler 1 through Kindergarten Prep.’ So parents are encouraged to pick up their favorite preschooler book and help spread the word about reading to your kids.

NOTE: THIS DRIVE IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, so pass the word around to your co-workers, family, friends, and neighbors throughout Colorado!!
