Should the open carry of firearms in town-owned buildings and parks be allowed? We hit the streets and asked some Castle Rock residents what they think in addition to throwing in the ability open carry at all in privately owned property as well and got some mixed responses.

  1. While you’re posting about Castle Rock, those that live in outlying areas ALSO should have a say. When a select few want to restrict someone’s rights, including those outside of your boundaries, it makes one think twice about spending their money in your town, so be careful what you wish for, the economic repercussions can come back to haunt you.

    • Here Kevin let me help you with your economic boycott. Granted this is a limited list since I don’t see Castle Rock mentioned and it’s dated from a few years back so some laws may have changed. I don’t have time to research. I’m going out on a limb here by saying that shopping in Denver is out of the question for you…

  2. Being a Christian has nothing to do with the 2nd amendment. I’m a Christian and believe people have the right to open carry in buildings and parks owned by the city.

I am glad this will be on the ballot. It should be up to the residents of the Castle Rock and not a single person, the town manager.

  3. Your poll was not specific enough since many people are unaware of what it means to “open and carry” and the actual buildings involved. Currently in Castle Rock, you can legally open and carry any legal fire arm except if banned for legal concerns (i.e. court house) those places owned by the town or if the private owner says no. For most people they think handguns only but this also includes rifles, semi-automatic rifles, and shotguns to name a few. Unlike conceal and carry, openly carried does not require the owner to get any sort of training on how to safely handle the weapon. (I certainly hope they do!) You could get it from the store, load it and take it out for a walk down Main Street all in one day. What recently happened in the Texas open and carry demonstration is an example of what types of guns are included in open and carry.
The second thing to be clear are the types of property this includes. The Rec center, town parks, and playgrounds are included on this list. How comfortable would you feel if a parent showed up at your son’s soccer game or swim meet with a semi-automatic rifle? It may not happen but our town council has been pushing for that right.
What would have been interesting is if your interviewer asked the actual ballot measure and how people would vote. It is deliberately confusing.
SHALL TOWN COUNCIL ORDINANCE 2014-03 BE APPROVED WHICH ORDINANCE REVOKES THE AUTHORITY OF THE TOWN MANAGER UNDER THE MUNICIPAL CODE TO PROHIBIT THE OPEN CARRYING OF FIREARMS WITHIN MUNICIPAL BUILDINGS, PARKS, RECREATION AREAS AND OTHER MUNICIPAL PROPERTIES OWNED OR OPERATED BY THE TOWN OF CASTLE ROCK?
    YES __ NO __
